People told to uphold security

JAKARTA (JP): City Military Chief Maj. Gen. Sutiyoso has asked Central Jakarta residents to maintain security by being more alert to potential sources of provocation.

Speaking during the tarawih prayer at the Al-Furqon mosque Wednesday Sutiyoso said anything which could lead people up the wrong path must be dealt with properly "or we will regret it afterwards."

Sutiyoso was accompanied by his staff and Central Jakarta Mayor Abdul Kahfi.

The two-star general called on people to be more careful about seemingly trivial things which could lead to riots or violence. He referred to recent riots at the textile market at Tanah Abang, Central Jakarta, in Tasik Malaya, West Java and in Sanggau Ledo, West Kalimantan.

"The riots started with trivial things," he said. (sur)
