Peace concert confirms return of normalcy to Ambon

Enthusiasm was high as many thousands of Ambon people attended a concert on Friday to mark Independence Day, which fell two days earlier.

Over 100 singers, musicians and artists were flown in from Jakarta to the formerly troubled city of Ambon. At least 177 performers appeared during the event, including top national acts from Maluku, such as Glenn Fredly, Grace Simon, Marsello Tahitoe (Ello), T-Five, Utha Likumahua, Rio Febrian, the Mollucas, Harvey Malaiholo and Ridho. In addition, many nationally famous actors also participated in the concert, including Titik Puspa, Dewi Sandra, Marsela Zalianty, Luna Maya and Tracy Trinita.

Titled the "Peace Concert", it was the biggest musical event held in the city since sectarian conflict erupted there in 1999. For one night in the Merdeka Field, Ambon, the barrier between Muslims and Christians appeared to break down. People from both faiths mingled together. Girls with Muslim headscarfs and girls wearing crucifix chains stood side by side without any sign of enmity. Apparently forgetting temporarily about the bitter and bloody conflict that had rent them asunder, they all enthusiastically lapped up the spectacle.

The Merdeka Field was turned into a sea of people. Ignoring the rain, many thousands of people from across Ambon city and its environs packed the field.

"I am surprised that so many people attended the function. We have been trapped for so long in conflict, it has made us hungry for entertainment," said a spectator.

A member of the Peace Concert committee, Hary Souisa, said that besides providing entertainment for the public, the concert was also aimed at showing that Maluku was now safe.

Nevertheless, many spectators were still nervous that the joy could turn to horror. "I'm afraid somebody might try to ignite trouble by throwing a bomb into the crowd. If that happened, a lot of people would die," said Ambon resident Chris De Fretes. However, his fears proved to be unwarranted.

Maluku Governor Karel Albert Ralahalu was elated as the concert turned out to be a resounding success. "This great concert shows that a sense of togetherness has returned to Maluku," said the Governor.
