PDI Perjuangan probes bribery case

JAKARTA: The Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI Perjuangan) has summoned all its legislators on the House of Representative Commission IX on finance to clarify bribery allegations.

After the weekly party meeting led by chairwoman Megawati Soekarnoputri on Tuesday, party deputy chairman Mangara Siahaan said the summons was sent to follow up on reports of alleged bribery.

"We will also summon Kwik Kian Gie who has made public statements about the case," Mangara said, referring to the State Minister of National Development.

The bribery case was revealed last week when several legislators from PDI Perjuangan admitted they were offered money by the Indonesian Bank Restructuring Agency (IBRA) during the sale of a state-owned bank.

The statement came from defiant members of the party, including Indira Damayanti Sugondo, who has tendered her resignation from the party, and Meilono Soewondo.

Mangara also said the board considered the statements from the legislators questionable as Meilono was among a group of businessmen who made an offer on one of IBRA's assets.--JP
