PDI-P delays celebration

DENPASAR, Bali: A party's ceremony to commemorate the 29th anniversary of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI Perjuangan) here has been moved back to a date convenient for the party's chairwoman President Megawati Soekarnoputri.

The event's organizing committee chairman I Made Urip said that Megawati would be unable to attend the event if it were to take place on its originally scheduled date of Jan. 23, due to her busy state agenda in Jakarta.

It is hoped that Megawati will speak at the party function.

Urip, who is a House of Representatives legislator, said the committee was working out how to guarantee Megawati's appearance at the event.

"The chairman's speech is much awaited here, and we are ready to hold the anniversary celebration at any time until March," he was quoted by Antara news agency as saying.

The committee is waiting confirmation from the party's executive board on Megawati's availability. -- Antara
