PDI campaigner sings alone

JAKARTA: Many people at rallies do not believe in the parties organizing them. They follow the "fiesta of democracy" for the thrill of joining thousands of people at rallies or for other reasons.

No wonder many do not know the leaders or policies of the parties holding the rallies.

Djeni Suharso, an Indonesian Democratic Party campaigner, found this out the hard way Sunday while addressing a PDI rally in North Jakarta.

He took the microphone and shouted to the crowd, "Okay, let's start singing the PDI Anthem."

Then he found he was singing alone. The so-called PDI supporters stood in baffled silence because they did not know the words. (swe/05)
