PDI accepts youth offers

SURABAYA, East Java: The East Java chapter of the Indonesian Democratic Party (PDI) has said that they will accept around 5,000 youths to act as vote-counting witnesses in the coming general elections in 1997.

"Basically we agree with the plan, but for a better prepared operation, we will first discuss the plan with the Central Board of Council," Imam Soeroso, chief of PDI regional chapter, told Antara yesterday.

Imam said that the presence of witnesses at vote counts is a prerequisite to ensure voter confidentiality in line with the principles of free elections.(03)
