PDAM project blocks water

PADANG, West Sumatra: Upset farmers have vandalized the pipe installation of state-owned tap water company PDAM at Kubang Nan Duo Village, Payung Sekaki district, which they claim has caused some 115-hectares of paddy to run dry.

"We need the water for our lives as well as for watering our rice field," Muchtar Malin Kayo, a local community leader, said on Friday.

The farmers have repeatedly complained about the Rp 1.2 billion installation project which they claim is obstructing the village's only water source.

The farmers later Friday held a meeting with local councillors who promised to forward their petition to related agencies.

However, some legislators were pessimistic that the project would be canceled. (28/edt)
