PD Pasar Jaya to upgrade 26 markets

JAKARTA: City-owned market operator PD Pasar Jaya plans to renovate 26 traditional markets.

In cooperation with private companies, it has allocated Rp 260 billion (US$27.27 million) to renovate 18 of the markets.

Speaking on the sidelines of a groundbreaking ceremony for the Shanta Market in South Jakarta, PD Pasar president director Prabowo Soenirman said on Friday that the project would start this year as the Urban Architecture Advisory Team (TPAK) had approved the renovation of the first 11 markets in the project.

Shanta Market, first constructed in the 1970s, would be renovated into a three-story building to accommodate 1,100 kiosks with rental fees ranging from Rp 6.5 million to Rp 16 million per square meter per year. -- JP
