PBSI uses motivational trainer for juniors

JAKARTA (JP): In a bid to improve the performance of its junior players, the Badminton Association of Indonesia (PBSI) has invited a motivational trainer in to encourage younger shuttlers ahead of international tournaments.

The PBSI official in charge of athletes development, Mangombar Ferdinand Siregar, said on Thursday PBSI invited Andrie Wongso to provide input to the association on how to increase the juniors' motivation.

"It's not wrong to listen to another person's opinion on what they think of PBSI," he said.

Siregar said some senior shuttlers had also visited Andrie for inspiration ahead of important events, including the Thomas Cup.

Andrie, owner of the Action and Wisdom motivation training center, said his Thursday encounter with the young athletes was only the start of improving the PBSI training method.

"This is a brainwashing process. Not all of the shuttlers can understand what their motivation is to become a shuttler. We know that non-technical factors really influences a shuttler's performance on court," said Andrie, who also owns the Harvest card factory.

Andrie told the junior players they needed 100 percent self- confidence to attain their goals.

"Without 100 percent self-confidence, you won't be a champion. You must all focus your attention on one purpose: to be a winner," he said.

The 19 juniors were admitted to the National Training Center in Cipayung, East Jakarta, after several selections late last year and early this year. They include men's singles Vidre Wibowo and Arief Rasidi, women's singles Mona Santoso and Enny Erlangga and the men's doubles twin team of Donny Prasetyo and Denny Setiawan.

Top officials from the association did not attend the session. Present were men's singles coach Agus Dwi Santoso, women's singles assistant coach Khoo Mei Hwa and official in charge of the juniors Sumar.

Andrie expressed hope that PBSI could create conditions where shuttlers could feel they were highly motivated for training sessions and competitions.

Siregar said he hoped the juniors would become more successful in reaching their targets after 2001, and would arrange a similar session for all coaches and senior shuttlers in the near future. (yan)
