Party rejects drugs users as recruits

JAKARTA: The People's Struggle Party (PPR) rejects new recruits who are in any way involved in drugs, PPR chairman Gustaf Gupe says.

Gustaf said on Sunday that even though the party was open to people from all walks of life, including former political prisoners like Gustaf himself, it drew the line when it came to drug users, or people linked to drugs.

"Drugs will spoil the image of our party. Drug users and traffickers clearly damage the nation's morals and its youth," Gustaf was quoted as saying by Antara on the sidelines of the opening of the party's Jakarta chapter.

PPR was launched on Aug. 26 last year and had been formed to accommodate the aspirations of people of all ethnicities religions and creeds. Some of its leaders are former political prisoners.

The party has opened a number of chapters in Indonesia, including in Central Java, Yogyakarta, South Sulawesi and Jakarta. --Antara
