Parents sentenced for baby's murder

JAMBI: Two young students, who were found guilty of murdering their six-day-old son, were sentenced yesterday to two years and one year in prison.

The Jambi State Court, headed by Judge Aly Syarifudin, sentenced Tunggal Prastowo, 21, to two years while his girlfriend, Lisnawati, 20, received a one-year sentence.

The sentences were lighter than the three years demanded by the prosecution.

The two Jambi University students were apparently ashamed of having to confront their parents with the news that their relationship had produced a child out of wedlock.

It was revealed during the court proceedings that Tunggul, picked up Lisnawati and the baby from a local hospital on Dec. 26.

Then, after being unable to find anyone with whom they could leave the baby boy, Tunggul decided to murder the child.

The boy was wrapped in a cloth which was weighed down with two brinks and thrown into the depths of the Buluran river.

Antara reported that two men found the dead baby two days later. It was identified by the medical bracelet still attached to its wrist.
