Papuan leaders meet legislators

JAKARTA: A number of Papuan leaders on Friday met legislators from the House of Representatives (DPR) Commission I on defense and political affairs to share their concern about the poor implementation of the special autonomy status for the province.

Former Papua governor Barnabas Suebu said despite the enactment of the law, the resource-rich province had not enjoyed full-fledged autonomy.

He demanded the legislators to push the government to implement the law accordingly.

Other Papuan figures who turned up for the meeting were Rev. Herwan Awom, Merry Wossing, and Philemon Indakoay.

The commission deputy chairman Effendy Choirie said the Papuan figures had provided members of the commission with valuable inputs ahead of their visit the province from Dec. 21 through to Dec. 24. -- JP
