Papuan KPU members elected
JAYAPURA, Papua: Papua has finally elected five members
representing different communities in the province to the General
Elections Committee (KPU), who will be installed officially on
Saturday in jakarta.
The five are activists Golda Aronggear and Johanis Bonay,
academicians Ferry Karet and Masa'ad and Hendrik Rumboirussi, who
represents religious institutions.
Governor J.P. Salossa said the Papuan representatives were
appropriate, because none of them came from the government or had
any link to political parties, so they should be independent in
organizing the elections in the province.
Hasim Sangaji, secretary of the Papua KPU, said the five would
join an orientation session held by the KPU in Jakarta before
being installed along with other members from across the country.
A working conference is to follow the swearing-in.
A provincial KPU is also in charge of selecting election
commission members at the regency and municipality levels. -- JP

Students arrested for drug dealing
PURWOKERTO, Central Java: The Purwokerto police seized five
university students for dealing drugs at their dormitory on
Thursday.
Five bags of marijuana were confiscated during the raid, and
police discovered that Heri, 22, a student from Kutasari,
Baturaden district, was the owner of the cannabis.
Heri admitted he had bought the drugs from an unknown man for
Rp 60,000, which he then sold at Rp 80,000 per bag, while the
other four students claimed they had obtained the drug from Heri.
Local police said on Friday that the students were not only
using drugs, but were also selling them to fellow students and at
entertainment centers. Police did not disclose the name of the
university to which the students belonged.
Adj. Sr. Comr. Winarno said that the drug trafficking ring
operating in the Banyumas area was hard to uncover "because most
of its networks are controlled from Jakarta, and the information
trail is usually cut off as we try to further our investigation."

More malaria victims in Indragiri Hilir
PEKANBARU, Riau: The death toll of the malaria epidemic in
several villages in the Riau regency of Indragiri Hilir over the
past month increased from 20 to 27 earlier this week.
Ekmal Rusydi, head of Riau's health office, said here on
Friday that in order to check the spread of the mosquito-
transmitted disease in the regency, his office had fumigated the
area and applied sanitary measures for a cleaner environment.
He pointed out that the affected villages, particularly those
in Mandah district, were difficult to access and did not have
health clinics, so that most malaria cases did not receive
immediate treatment.
Despite setting up clinics to provide first aid in the worst-
hit villages, Masykur Abdullah, head of the regental health
office, said the outbreak of malaria had never been as
widespread as it is today. --Antara
