Papua to build microhydropower plants

JAYAPURA, Papua: Papua authorities will construct three micro- hydropower plants a bid to cope with power shortages in the province.

The head of the office of state electricity company PT PLN in Jayapura, Supriyanto, said on Wednesday a team of experts from the World Bank had conducted a feasibility study over the province's water resources recently.

The team then decided to build three microhydropower plants in the districts of Jayapura, Yapen Waropen, and Prafi and Manokwari.

Suriyanto said that the construction of the power plants would also lead to the development of other sectors, such as agriculture and fisheries. --Antara
