Paper Week is nearly upon us

JAKARTA: People wishing to save the environment are being encouraged to participate in Paper Week, which will take place on Oct. 28 at the west plaza of the Bung Karno sports complex in Senayan here.

All participants, including companies, organizations, families and individuals, are being asked to collect used paper from their offices, homes, schools and churches and to bring them to Senayan.

The event, held by the non-governmental organization Aikon, is aimed at increasing people's awareness to collect, sort and recycle used paper.

There will be an exhibition informing all about paper such as paper history and technology, workshops on paper recycling, examples of Japanese paper art called Origami, and Chinese lanterns and kites.

Participants can also participate in several games and quizzes, all related to paper of course.

This is the second running of this event. The first was held on June, 29 in the parking lot of the Jakarta Art House in Central Jakarta. At that time, the organization was able to collect some 18.5 tons of used paper. The biggest contribution was from the huge American shoe company, Nike which has factories in Indonesia, with 6,785 kgs of used papers.--JP
