Palembang constructs new stadium

PALEMBANG, South Sumatra: South Sumatra Governor Rosihan Arsyad officially inaugurated the development of a new sports complex in Jakabaring village of Seberang Ulu district.

The complex will consist of three buildings boasting a Rp 109 billion (US$10.5 million) main stadium standing in a 40-hectare land.

Arsyad hailed the start as a sign that South Sumatra provincial administration was seriously prepared in all ways for the 2004 National Games (PON) slated in September.

"Yes, we have started preparing everything which is needed for the National Games," Arsyad said while expecting the construction would be finished on time by early 2004.

"But we have yet choose the name of the building. For the mean time, we call it Bumi Sriwijaya Main Stadium." -- JP
