Over 200 schools on verge of collapse

YOGYAKARTA: Some 200 out of a total of 576 school buildings in Yogyakarta are in a state of serious disrepair, putting students at risk of being victims of a building collapse.

Sixty-seven of those were elementary school buildings, said Sumitro, the head of the Infrastructure and Facility Section at Yogyakarta Education Office. The school buildings have deteriorated due to age and adverse weather.

Sumitro said that the government had earmarked Rp 1.9 billion (US$202,127) for the renovation of over 200 buildings. -- JP
