Over 1,000 workers hold rally

TANGERANG: More than 1,000 workers from two companies protested in front of the Tangerang Manpower and Population Agency office here on Tuesday.

About 700 of the protesters came from Korean-owned PT Indolim, a sewing company. One of the workers told The Jakarta Post the company owed them money.

The worker said the company gave employees 40 percent of their monthly salaries for last year's Idul Fitri bonus, promising to pay the remaining 60 percent of the bonus at a later time. However, the employees have yet to receive the money.

Some 350 workers from PT Komenta Can also held a rally. They were protesting the contract system the company imposed on its 900 employees.

"Most of the workers have been working for the company for more than two years, but none of us have been made permanent employees," Supardi, 30, said, adding that the workers had been holding protests since last Wednesday.

No one from the manpower agency or the two companies met with the protesters. -- JP
