Ortiz takes WBC light flyweight title

MEXICO CITY: Mexico's Eric Ortiz claimed the vacant World Boxing Council light flyweight title here on Friday, stopping compatriot Jose Antonio Aguirre in the seventh round.

Ortiz, 27, improved to 25-4, with 16 wins inside the distance, with the victory over his friend and fellow Mexico City native. He claimed the title vacated by another Mexican, Jorge Arce, in order to move up in weight.

Aguirre, who fell to 35-3, failed in his bid to claim his first title since losing the WBC minimum weight crown to Eagle Kyowa in Japan in January of 2004.
