Orderly campaigns and fair elections

As the campaigning period for the general election draws to a close, various interesting developments are taking place. Sympathizers of the ousted Indonesian Democratic Party (PDI) leader Megawati have taken to the streets to join United Development Party (PPP) campaigns.

From a legal point of view, the display of "Mega-bintang" banners is inappropriate. But there is no reason to react to their campaigning enthusiasm by taking unwise measures. There is no need to prohibit the campaigning zest. This enthusiasm should be observed without suspicion.

On the other hand, violent and uncontrollable campaigns deserve to be strictly dealt with. The rising heat of the campaign period must not be allowed to continue, and should be controlled. The campaign period will end on May 29 when Indonesians cast their vote in the general election. A honest, fair and free general election will add to the good standing of democracy in Indonesia.
