One killed in WWII explosion

JAYAPURA, Irian Jaya: One resident of Argapura subdistrict died and five others were seriously injured when one of several World War II bombs they had collected in the area exploded on Tuesday morning, Antara said on Wednesday.

Jayapura Police Chief Lt. Col. J. Pieter Silooy said on Wednesday Dance Patai, 46, died from severe injuries to his neck, feet, arms and chest. Those who were injured included Daniel Patai, 18, who lost both legs in the explosion. In addition, one house near the site was damaged.

Daniel Wanggai, who witnessed the incident but was unhurt, said the six victims tried to saw the bomb open in order to take its powder to make their own device for dynamite fishing.

Police confiscated seven other old bombs. (swe)
