One killed in Entrop market fray
JAYAPURA, Irian Jaya: A man has been killed in a fight near a market between migrants and local residents, police said on Monday.
The fatality was identified as 42-year-old migrant Untung, who died after being stoned and stabbed by the rival crowd on Sunday, local police chief Lt. Col. Daud Sihombing said.
Earlier reports said 11 people were injured in the clash, which sparked the fire at the nearby Entrop market.
Witnesses said the brawl began when an unidentified resident of Wamena visited Abdul K. Manggalo, a migrant from Makassar in South Sulawesi on Sunday morning. It remained unclear what they argued about, but later Manggalo was seen chasing his guest with a knife.
In a retaliation attack, a gang of five men vandalized Manggalo's house and injured him.
Soon after the fight, about 300 people brandishing sharp weapons attacked and burned the market and an adjacent bus terminal. (eba/edt)
