One killed in disco melee

JAKARTA: One person was killed in a brawl between Ambonese and Papuan people at Laila discotheque on Jl. Gatot Subroto, Setiabudi, South Jakarta, while a security guard was injured, a police report said on Monday.

"There were some 150 people involved in the melee, which occurred early on Monday morning," the report said.

A Papuan man, Yoyo Kai Wae, 25, was killed, with a stab wound to his stomach. The brawl also resulted in a head injury to Mardiono, a security guard at the discotheque, according to the report.

Setiabudi Police subprecinct chief Comr. Sutrisno declined to provide a detailed reason for the brawl.

"Ask the South Jakarta Police chief for further comment. I have limited authority to provide any details (on the melee)," he told The Jakarta Post over the phone.

The South Jakarta Police chief was not available for comment.--JP
