One dies in landslide

DEMAK, Central Java: A man died and another was seriously
injured in a landslide yesterday in Mranggen, some 10 km east of
the provincial capital of Semarang.

Antara reported that the landslide occurred when the two men,
along with 10 others, were quarrying sand in a mountainous area
near their village.

The two victims were found when villagers used a crane to move
earth from the site of the landslide. The injured victim was
brought to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.

Many workers who have recently lost their jobs due to the
economic crisis have moved to the area to work as limestone
diggers. (rms)
