One dies in Gelael shooting spree
JAKARTA (JP): One person was killed and another injured after an armed robber opened fire at a Gelael supermarket on Jl M.T. Haryono, in Tebet, South Jakarta, Thursday night, police said.
Ozi Saputra, 23, a bystander, died in Cipto Mangunkusumo hospital yesterday morning from a severe head injury while Rusnani, 18, a cashier, was still in a critical condition in the hospital yesterday.
Eyewitnesses said the robber came into the shop when it was about to close at 9 p.m. and got away with Rp 1 million (US$111) after he opened fire and scared off the attendants.
They said the robber entered the supermarket and threatened the cashier with a gun, which police identified as an FN-22.
"When the cashier screamed 'robber, robber' the robber panicked and opened fire at people on sight before he ran out of the shop," an eyewitness said.
Rusnani was being treated for a serious neck injury.
The head of the South Jakarta detectives, Maj. A. Rycko, told reporters that he hoped the suspect would be caught soon. (ivy/edt)
