On the Record: Kings of Convenience

Artist : Kings of Convenience
Album : Riot on an Empty Street (EMI Music)

The work of Norwegian duo Kings of Convenience is best described by the title of their 2001 debut album: Quiet is The New Loud.

It sure isn't an inconvenience to hear the two playing as the understated beauty of their acoustic guitar harmonies speaks volumes.

Their sophomore effort Riot on an Empty Street shows that Erlend Oye and Eirik Glambek Boe have definitely got it.

With subtlety and radiance, similar to that of Simon and Garfunkel, the folksters deliver simple yet charming melodies.

This is Scandinavian pop at its greatest. Standout tracks on the album include Misread, I'd Rather Dance With You and an upbeat number with a catchy banjo hook Love Is No Big Truth.

The lads also have a smart way of writing lyrics that are self-deprecating and fragile, yet genuine. Although they are not yet strong enough to stick in our minds.

But, all in all, not at all a waste of money. -- Hera Diani
