On the record: Destiny's Child

Artist : Destiny's Child
Album : Destiny Fulfilled

Independent women, survivors, wherefore art thou? For those appearing now on this record are girls confused, or maybe just real dim-witted.

The first hint of a problem is Cater 2 U, a saccharine ballad basically saying what Britney means by I'm a Slave For You, where the girls of Destiny's Child offer to brush their men's hair, put his do-rag on, rub his feet and give him a manicure. And oh, they promise to keep their figure right too!

The devotion also appears in other songs, such as T-Shirt.

The other off-putting thing is how very generic this album is, their first in three years. Whether performing a ballad or an upbeat dance tune, the R&B sound is so predictable that it does not leave much of an impression.

The first track, Lose My Breath, is meant to be the other hit. While it does catch ones ears, the recycled beat wears off after a while.

Yes, the beautiful voices are still there. The wonderful vocal harmonization also still exists.

But the energy, the groove and the distinctive sound that made Destiny's Child a couple years ago has seemingly disappeared in thin air, making this album a redundant effort and a waste of talent. -- Hera Diani
