On STDs

I was very happy to see your article on sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and teenagers (Confronting the issue of STDs in teenagers) dated July 18, 2001. Indeed, this is a critical issue in Indonesia and I congratulate you for bringing this to the attention of the general public.

I was surprised however to see that the article stated that "a condom with spermicidal foam... has been shown to reduce the risk of contracting STDs but does not protect against AIDS".

All evidence to date strongly supports the fact that condoms are an extremely effective barrier against the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), the virus that causes acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Condoms are as effective in preventing AIDS as they are in preventing other sexually transmitted diseases or infections. I would be pleased to provide references to such studies if they are needed.

In reading the article, I assume Dr. Donya was trying to emphasize the fact that some spermicides, such as nonoxynol 9, have been reported to cause reactions (such as rashes) among people who use it frequently (such as sex workers). In these cases, such reactions may outwiegh the benefits of using condoms. However, I do not think this point is clearly made in the article and may therefore create confusion among teenagers.

The bottom line: condoms are an effective way to prevent STDs.
