On sexual attitude

It was very interesting to read C. Parry's letter about the issue of sexual attitudes here in Indonesia (The Jakarta Post, Aug. 23, 2000). Well, I must admit, first of all, I myself take it for granted that the changes in sexual attitudes in Indonesia are merely because of western influence. But as you said, it's just an excuse, and I think it has an explanation which makes it an excuse.

As information media (from the TV, magazines, Internet) is growing rapidly, all kinds of information (news, film, music) are flying freely from one country to another. In Indonesia, most of the entertainment in television is imported from western countries, such as America. And the influence can not be ignored. As can be seen from the screen, westerners have a different way of life than people in Indonesia. As far as sexuality is concerned (in terms of the way of life and perception of it) they are freer than Indonesians.

Changes in sexual attitudes here seem to be much influenced by the transparency of information media. And in my opinion, it still needs a long time to say and prove that Indonesian sexual attitudes are changing because Indonesians themselves want to change.
