Officials rally for contract extension

SAMARINDA, East Kalimantan: Hundreds of temporarily employed
workers from 42 agencies here staged a protest on Wednesday at
the East Kalimantan legislative council against the local
government's plans to lay off 1,940 staff in June.

They urged the administration to continue employing them.

"We have the right to enjoy East Kalimantan's resources," a
protest pamphlet said.

An earlier rally by the workers received no response from
authorities. -- JP
