Officials on anthrax alert

JAKARTA: The Central Jakarta Husbandry Office will monitor all abattoirs -- but particularly the goat abattoir in Pasar Tanah Abang -- in anticipation of anthrax spreading to the capital, beritajakarta.com reported on Friday.

Head of the Central Jakarta Husbandry Office Sigit said that his office will also check on the health certificates of various goat farmers in the area.

"Goat farmers must show us proof of their goats' health by showing health certificates issued by veterinarians from the animals' place of origin," he said.

Sigit said his office had vaccinated some 80 cows from the Gunung Sahari area this week, and that it would carry out further vaccinations in the region to prevent the spread of the disease. --JP
