Officer shoots dead wife's robber

JAKARTA (JP): A thief was shot and killed by a police officer after snatching a shopping bag belonging to the policeman's wife at the Naga shopping center in Pondok Gede, Bekasi, on Monday, according to a police report.

First Sergeant S.A. Wahid, a member of the Jakarta Police's mobile unit, and his wife were at the shopping center when a robber, identified as Indra Sirait, 24, grabbed her bag and began to flee.

"The police officer fired a warning shot but the thief kept running, so the officer was forced to shoot him," the report says.

The suspect died at the scene after being shot in the chest and the left leg. His body was taken to Cipto Mangunkusumo General Hospital.

After the shooting, Wahid went to the Pondok Gede Police station to report the incident. (jaw)
