Officer detained for beating

JAKARTA (JP): Jakarta Police internal affairs are questioning an officer of the Tebet police subprecinct in South Jakarta, for allegedly beating up his girlfriend with a sharp steal weapon in a room at the Wisma Uliarta building in Cimanggis, Depok, on Saturday.

Police internal affairs chief Lt. Col. Mustofa identified the officer as First. Sgt. Teguh Santoso, 37, of the Tebet police, and the victim as Sugiarti, 32, Teguh's girlfriend.

"The couple were having a serious fight. The officer first struck her with his hands, then he hit her head with a sharp, steel weapon," Mustofa said.

When asked if it was due to the possibility of the girl being pregnant, Mustofa just laughed.

"They were fighting and making a lot of noise in the room. When the girl started bleeding profusely from the back of her head, someone asked for help from the building's security guard. It became a police matter."

Mustofa said Sugiarti was currently doing fine and was resting at her home.

"I will always be fair, to all people. Teguh will receive his sanctions accordingly," Mustofa said, refusing to elaborate on the sanctions.

Separately, Tebet police chief Maj. Aslimanao said he was unaware of the whole affair.

"I don't think I have any officer by the name of Santoso. I don't know anything," Aslimanao said. (ylt)
