Oesman installed as MPR deputy speaker

JAKARTA: People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) regional
representatives faction chairman Oesman was sworn in as one of
the legislative body's deputy speakers on Wednesday.

Shortly after his induction by MPR Speaker Amien Rais, Oesman
said his immediate program was strengthening ties with the media,
whom he said played a crucial role in disseminating information
about the assembly's achievements.

He also said he wanted to improve the living conditions of
people outside of Jakarta. "Jakarta enjoys everything that comes
from the regions," he said.

The regional representatives faction was given a place in the
Assembly leadership during last August's MPR Annual Session,
after a lengthy debate which started in 2000.

Oesman said his faction deserved the post because the Assembly
needed a voice that accommodated the interests of the common
