Nurdin to spend holiday in jail

JAKARTA: National Police chief of detectives Comr. Gen. Suyitno Landung said on Friday that suspected sugar smuggler Nurdin Halid would remain in detention despite a request from several legislators that he be allowed to spend the Idul Fitri holiday at home.

Twenty-five legislators from the Golkar Party asked the police on Thursday to allow Nurdin, a former Golkar lawmaker, to celebrate Idul Fitri at home with his family.

The lawmakers offered their guarantee that Nurdin would not flee, destroy evidence, or skip questioning sessions.

Also on Friday, the Jakarta Prosecutor's Office returned Nurdin's case file to the police for additional documents. -- JP
