NU, Muhammadiyah agree on Ramadhan

JAKARTA: The country's largest Muslim organizations, Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) and Muhammadiyah, appear to have agreed on the date for the start of Ramadhan fasting month, two officials said.

Chairman of Muhammadiyah's Lampung provincial chapter Husni Sjarnubi and his NU counterpart Khairuddin said their organizations had declared Oct. 15 the start of the month-long fasting, which precedes the Idul Fitri holiday.

"Despite the decision, we will verify it with the appearance of the new moon," Khairuddin said.

Due to different methods to estimate the fall of major holidays, followers of NU and Muhammadiyah sometimes celebrate the same holidays on different dates. -- Antara
