NTB chosen for fishing project

MATARAM: West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) is among four provinces selected for a pilot project for intensification of fishing operations, a local official says.

The head of the fishery products office, Bambang Kartiko, said Tuesday that the project, involving 50 fishermen and 10 small vessels, would be centralized at the Tanjung Luar, Lombok Timur regency.

"The fishermen will be trained in how to use proper fishing methods," he was quoted as saying by Antara yesterday.

The trial is part of the government's efforts to increase the volume of the fishing catch in the area.

Bambang said most of the fishermen were part of small-scale operations and the government provided annual recommendations on improving their work.

He identified the other participating provinces as West, Central and East Java. (sur)
