Norwegia funds rights trial teleconference

JAKARTA: The Norwegian embassy in Indonesia confirmed on Tuesday its government's donation to fund the teleconferencing in an East Timor rights violation case at a Jakarta-based human rights court.

Norwegian ambassador Sjur Jorgersen said that his government had agreed to allocate US$10,000 for a teleconference during an ongoing human rights trial to assist judges here in meting out justice.

"I'm happy the teleconferencing finally could be held here," he told The Jakarta Post.

The fund was channeled to the United Nations, which had coordinated with the Indonesian Attorney General's Office and East Timor to hold the teleconference, he said.

He hoped key witnesses like former Dili Bishop Carlos Filipe Ximenes Belo would be able to testify in court via teleconference. --JP
