No time for experimenting

On the evening of Aug. 23, I was very surprised when l heard
the Cabinet members of President Abdurrahman Wahid or Gus Dur
announced by the palace secretary.

In light of the economic team, which is against the market's
expectation, one day after the announcement, the rupiah began to
fall.

In fact, Gus Dur had a big opportunity to boost the rupiah if
he had stuck to his promise of choosing professional and noted
economists who already have widespread integrity, as members of
the economic team.

Now everyone is called on to give the new economic team a
chance to work and use their expertise for a speedy recovery of
our ailing economy. However, it should be noted that this is not
the right time for experimenting. Our nation is in an emergency
state and needs prompt and effective treatment. So each member
of the newly reshuffled Cabinet should know exactly how to
execute their program.
