No politics, please, rector

BANDAR LAMPUNG, Lampung: Lampung State University Rector Alhusniduki Hamim's legislative candidacy for the Golkar has met strong opposition.

Thousands of anonymous colorful leaflets left in classrooms, corridors and on roadsides on the campus demanded yesterday that Hamim should withdraw from the election and apologize to the university.

The rector is ranked 17 on the list, meaning that if Golkar wins at least 17 seats in Lampung in the May 29 election he will become a member of the House of Representatives in Jakarta.

The leaflets also said that the rector should not risk his integrity by affiliating with any political organization.

Hamim was quoted by Antara as saying he did not take the leaflets seriously because he believed the authors had their own political interests.

"There is no reason to make an issue out of it ," he said, adding that he would not turn his campus into a political stage for Golkar. (pan)
