No plan to summon Mega: Police
JAKARTA: Police have no immediate plans to summon President Megawati Soekarnoputri to testify on the July 27, 1996 attacks on the headquarters of the Indonesian Democratic Party (PDI) which was then occupied by her die-hard supporters.
National Police Chief Gen. Da'i Bachtiar said on Monday that other witnesses had provided sufficient information on the case so there was no need to summon Megawati.
The proposal to summon Megawati, chairwoman of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (DPI Perjuangan), came from the party's lawyers who argued that as the party's leader, she knew of the attack before it happened.
The attack was allegedly arranged by the Indonesian Military (TNI) under former president Suharto to crush Megawati and her supporters.--JP
