No motorized rickshaws

PONOROGO, East Java: The Ponorogo City Land Transportation Agency has rejected the presence of motorized rickshaws, becak, saying that there is no ordinance regulating them yet.

"All motorized vehicles must be registered, including the motorized becak,," the local Agency chief, Zaenal Sjamsul Bachtiar, said here on Sunday.

"However neither the police nor we know how to categorize them yet," he added.

The quiet East Java city has seen the emergence of these motorized rickshaws in recent weeks. It is believed there are a total of 10 such vehicles.

Among the difficulties, according Zaenal, is that as a registered motorized vehicle there has to be a company accountable for its construction and to provide such requirements as chasms numbers and engine designs.

Antara also reported that another immediate problem would then be that the drivers of these vehicles would be required to have a drivers' license.(mds)
