No more funds for dump site

TANGERANG: The development of a five-hectare dump site in Jatiwaringin village, Mauk district, Tangerang, has been halted due to a shortage of funds.

The project commenced in 1999 and was scheduled to be completed in June this year to replace the dump in Rawakucing, Neglasari.

The municipal administration had spent Rp 3.3 billion while the Asian Development Bank (ADB) had also disbursed Rp 2.6 billion.

So far, the municipal administration had constructed the road leading to the dump site, which is 380 meters long and 6 meters wide, a 588-square-meter garbage pound, another road 200 meters long and 6 meters wide and three stabilization ponds.

However, the garbage pound could only hold waste for 48 days, with a capacity of 100 trucks of garbage per day, while the stabilization ponds have not functioned properly.

Deputy of the municipal administration Harry Mulya Zain, who is responsible for development supervision told The Jakarta Post that the administration had spent Rp 1 billion in acquiring the five-hectare site in 1999. That means he paid Rp 100,000 per square meter, quite a high price considering the location of the land and its relative isolation.

Harry said he needed more money to continue the project. He could not give a figure, saying he had to calculate it. Nevertheless, he hoped that the ADB would disburse more money.--JP
