So local media (willfully?) misrepresent a story to garner the greatest amount of Nationalistic outrage; outrage ensues; story turns out to be bullshit all along.

it was a jingoistic beat-up right from the very start.

makes me think there is someone out there deliberately trying to stir up nationalist craziness. ganyang malaysia is also making a come-back at the moment. once again, on the most flimsy of grounds. Metro TV is going way over the top on the "issue"; past three nights have featured "Ganyang Malaysia" psuedo-documentaries that have been fast and loose with the truth, and clearly designed to inflame hatred.

it makes one wonder whether the TNI are behind all this nonsense.

What is status of the naming of all our islands?

We have named some 5,000 of around 17,000 islands in Indonesia. We are trying to name 1,000 islands a year, but it all depends on our budget.

Eh? I'm not doing much at the moment - bung us a few juta and I'll name a few.

The Indonesian public was shocked at news that three islands in Mentawai, West Sumatra, were sold online via a Canadian website, for prices ranging between US$1.6 million and $8 million. The islands sold were reportedly Makaroni, Siloinak and Kandui Islands. Aji Sularso, the Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Ministry director general of the monitoring and controls, clarified the issue to The Jakarta Post's Irawaty Wardany, saying no island had been sold and that he had asked the Foreign Ministry to use diplomatic means to request the foreign site clarify the news. The following are excerpts from the interview.

Question: Is it true that three (Indonesian) islands were sold?

Answer: No. I've checked it out and I did not find de facto evidence about this. Besides, this would have been impossible because no regulation legalizes ownership of an island by foreigners in Indonesia.

Let me get this straight. it all started with an advertisement on a Canadian website, www.privatesislandsonline.com, which publicized the sale of resorts on the three islands. The three resorts are managed by foreigners but owned by Indonesian companies and Indonesian people. So it was not the islands that were sold.

So what is the status of the islands now?

The islands are still part of the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia, and some parts of the islands are being leased to an Indonesian company managed by foreigners that has built a resort to support maritime tourism on the islands.

What steps were taken by the Indonesian government in relation to this case?

I have asked the Foreign Ministry to clarify this issue with the website and if we find any misconduct related to Indonesians regarding the ads, we will investigate further.

The most important thing here is there was no sale, and it is impossible for foreigners to own islands in this country because it is not supported by any regulation.

How does the government monitor the thousands of islands and coasts throughout the archipelago?

Our main duties and responsibilities are regulated by the 2004 Fisheries Law and the 2007 Law on the Management of Coastal Areas and Remote Islands, under which local communities are involved in our monitoring, controls and surveillance program.

We also use satellite surveillance to monitor all fishing vessels operating in Indonesia, because all vessels licensed to operate in Indonesian waters have been fitted with transmitters that allow them to be tracked easily by satellites.

However, with the Mentawai incidents, the system must be strengthened with land monitoring. Therefore I plan to build more offices and install more officials or civil servant investigators and patrol vessels, to monitor all activities in the islands. We also work with other agencies, such as the Navy.

What is status of the naming of all our islands?

We have named some 5,000 of around 17,000 islands in Indonesia. We are trying to name 1,000 islands a year, but it all depends on our budget.

What lessons can be learned from this incident?

Most of our people have misconceptions about making the most of our maritime areas. The 2002 regional regulation in Mentawai, for example, only focuses on conservation and retribution or rent fees gained from islands (land), where people build resorts, whereas the main attraction in maritime tourism is scenery and waves.

We only receive around Rp 600 million (US$59,000) from maritime tourism in the Mentawai region each year. This amount is too small, since Mentawai has some of the most beautiful waves in the world, and these are worth much more than that.

Therefore I anticipate that this regulation can be revised, referring more to the 2007 Law on the Management of Coastal Areas and Remote Islands to make better use of all maritime areas for the sake of local peoples, regional administrations and the central government.
