No clashes, please!

All presidential candidates have agreed to avoid violence in their campaigns, which will start tomorrow.

In a meeting with the Constitutional Court on Saturday the five candidates agreed to bring any electoral disputes to the court, while also promising to not hold any "black" campaigns or propaganda classified as character assassinations.

Given the democratic, fair and open April legislative election, we do hope that the first direct presidential election on July 5 will run smoothly and peacefully.

During the campaign period, the contestants are obliged to reveal their political platforms, visions, missions and programs, as well as top priorities in their agenda.

We support the contestants' commitment to keep cool, without any inflammatory speeches. Settling electoral disputes, if any, through the appropriate judicial process is a wise move.

Such a commitment is very important in a democratic society. -- Kompas, Jakarta
