No change in Australia

It is not an exaggeration to describe the profile of John Howard's administration, after the victory last Saturday, as one filled with a negative attitude toward the world surrounding it.

He may come to Jakarta, as promised, probably full of smiles and pleasant words. But what would be foremost on his mind is his own country's interest. As a modern western country, populated by mostly European descendants, Australia's long term interest lies in the solid relationship with Asian countries, especially Indonesia, based on transparency and solidarity.

Indonesia certainly values a smooth and mutually beneficial bilateral relationship with Australia. However, considering the pile of problems which seem to be burdening this relationship, the Megawati administration needs to be firm and clear in formulating and conveying Indonesia's national interests to Australia.
