NGOs seek review of water law

JAKARTA: A number of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) have moved to seek a review of the controversial Law No. 7/2004 on water resources.

The NGOs called on those among the public who believed their constitutional rights were adversely affected by the law, to join the move. The NGOs will file a judicial review of the bill with the Constitutional Court next week.

According to the NGOs, the law is against the Constitution because it is open to the commercialization of water. The NGOs said the state should provide citizens with access to safe and affordable water. -- JP
