NGOs protest local police chief

YOGYAKARTA (JP): Eight local non-governmental organizations lodged a complaint here on Sunday against the Yogyakarta police chief Brig. Gen. Logan Siagian for accusing the organizations of "mentally" terrorizing his leadership.

The NGOs, including the local chapters of the Indonesian Legal Aid Institute and the Alliance of Independent Journalists, demanded last week that the police chief be held accountable by the local legislature for failing to resolve major criminal cases in the area.

They also called on Logan to resign.

Logan struck back, however, at the NGOs saying that they had been "mentally" terrorizing him.

The groups said in a press statement on Sunday that Logan's comment was "undemocratic" and he was also accused of being "too authoritarian".(swa)
