NGO puts on events for women

JAKARTA: Non-governmental organization Kalyanamitra put on a number of different activities aimed at women over the weekend in Rawajati, South Jakarta.

The activities included discussions, a photo exhibition and art performances.

Dozens of women from the area shared their opinions during discussions about domestic violence and reproductive health.

One of the speakers, Citraningtyas of the Crisis Center at Cipto Mangunkusumo General Hospital, urged the women not to be reluctant to visit the center, which is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to seek help.

"You could come to the center. We have doctors, psychiatrists and social workers who can help if you have problems with violence, including rape," Citraningtyas said.

Besides the discussions, a number of students from the University of Indonesia performed a play about violence against women, particularly underage women.

The participants were informed that rape was often committed by someone close to the victim. They were told that if they or anyone they knew was raped they should go to the center for help and care. --JP
