Next census will take place in 2000

JAKARTA: Chairman of the Central Bureau of Statistics Sugito Suwito yesterday announced that Indonesia's 6th census will take place in October 2000.

The results will take about a year to process, he said after opening the 17th Population Census Conference yesterday. Some 500 people, plus computers and other modern equipment will be used.

Indonesia has conducted census for five times, once before independence in 1930, and in 1961, 1971, 1980, and 1990.

State Minister of Population Haryono Suyono attended the conference with approximately 60 others from 21 countries.

Most participants were senior staff or heads of national statistical and census offices. The conference takes place every 18 months. (ste)
